Swine diseases

The EQSP is a partnership created by Quebec pork producers and stakeholders to collectively manage the risks associated with certain diseases.

The diseases targeted by the EQSP’s interventions can be grouped into three categories:

  • Reportable diseases: are diseases listed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the main organization responsible for monitoring, controlling and eradicating reportable animal diseases in Canada. The EQSP and its partners support the CFIA.
  • Emerging Diseases: are new infections of diseases caused by such diseases as porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED), porcine deltacoronavirus (PDV) and Senecavirus A (SVA). Rapid detection and screening of a case are of great importance to prevent the spread of the disease.
  • Endemic diseases: are diseases that are constantly present in the province’s swine population, such as porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) and swine influenza.
