Disinfectants

Useful information on disinfectants after contamination with targeted diseases in pigs

The EQSP has produced materials for people in the swine sector as a tool to identify active disinfectants that can be used against the causative agents of certain targeted diseases. They can also be used to determine whether products are registered by Health Canada, its classification and components, to verify some of its general indications for use, and to identify contact persons.

This list is not exhaustive of all disinfectants registered by Health Canada that could be used against a specific causative agent. It includes only products that, based on various studies conducted by companies, private laboratories or others, have been recognized as effective by a government or scientific institution.

Whenever possible, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recommends using products registered by Health Canada that have a DIN, but when Health Canada-approved disinfectants are not available or the use of a product is contraindicated, products containing chemical compounds that have been shown to be effective and that are identical may be considered. Furthermore, the inclusion of a product in this document does not necessarily imply its endorsement by Health Canada or the CFIA.

While the reader may use this document to help identify potential products, it is their responsibility to ensure that the product label contains the indications for its use. It is recommended to inquire with the supplier regarding the manufacturer’s recommendations in this regard.
